Proud To Be American

I love the fourth of July.
As many countries as I’ve been to, there’s nothing like being at hometo celebrate the birthday of a country that means so much to me.
I usually spend the fourth of July in my hometown of Washington DC, crowded amongst millions of other people who come to see what is probably the most incredible display of fireworks in the USA.  I usually take a blanket, some food, and sit on the lawn of the capitol building to watch PBS present their annual “Capitol Fourth” concert, which has hosted performers like Stevie Wonder, JoJo, and the Beach Boys in years past.
This year however, I went back to my roots. My cousins own a farm a few hours south of Atlanta, and I decided to spend the fourth with them. The weather was absolutely perfect, the pool was beautiful, and the food couldn’t have been better! (& more American!!) Our feast consisted of homemade blueberry ice cream, [veggie] burgers & hotdogs, potato salad, apple pie, and homegrown corn.  Needless to say, I know I made the right decision.
As for fireworks, I definitely missed my DC display (Happy face fireworks are the greatest thing ever invented…) but the nearby town of Montezuma, GA had a nice show that we were all able to enjoy, sitting in the back of a pickup truck with country/American songs blaring out the stereo.  Who knew a lil ol’ city girl like me could appreciate the country so much?
It was definitely an experience to remember… Happy Birthday America :) I believe you’re 234 years old now?!
